Periodontal Disease. We are very excited we can now offer our patients a Salivary Test “Perio Path” that allows us to be able to diagnose and treat the specific periodontal bacteria in your mouth and therefore have more control of a good result after treatment rather than treat the disease blindly.

Periodontal disease is a silent progressor. It may progress slowly or rapidly and not always is it painful. This disease is an infection that destroys the gum surrounding your teeth and also damages the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place. Recent studies have linked this disease to cardiovascular disease, pulmonary infections, weakened immune system, diabetes and the risk of having premature, low weight babies. This disease can be controlled when a proper treatment plan chosen by your dentist and hygienist is implemented.

Scaling and Root planing is a common non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. This may be due to lack of adequate home oral hygiene, high sugar diet, deeper gum pocket depths around teeth or more extensive dental work that might inhibit access for a regular cleaning. Root planing & scaling is usually divided into two to four office visits. Novocaine is frequently used since this cleaning will attempt to get to the full depth of the deeper gum pockets. This procedure usually involves minimal pain and one should expect to resume social and professional activities later that same night and certainly the next day. Most people feel a tremendous difference in how much cleaner their mouth feels and how much fresher is their breath. The benefit can be quite profound and immediate.
